London, 23 February (AIM) - A major earthquake shook Mozambique just after midnight. Early reports gave no information on casualties, but there are reports coming in that two people have been killed and a dozen injured. According to the US Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Centre, the earthquake was of a magnitude 7.5 on the Richter scale.
The epicentre of the quake is 220 km south west of Beira and 530 km north of Maputo. According to Radio Mozambique, the epicentre was near the village of Espungabera.
The quake was felt as far away as South Africa, Zambia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, and there have been several aftershocks which could continue to occur for several days..
