Maputo, 4 December (AIM) - In the parallel count done by Radio Mozambique of
the results from the general elections held on Wednesday and Thursday, Armando
Guebuza, the presidential candidate of the ruling Frelimo Party, has now obtained
over a million votes, while his main rival, Afonso Dhlakama, leader of Renamo,
has not quite reached 400,000.
The radio has now obtained results from about half the polling stations in the second largest provincial constituency, Zambezia, which used to be regarded as a Renamo stronghold. In these results Guebuza is beating Dhlakama by a small margin (104,879 to 100,552). Even if Dhlakama overtakes Guebuza in the rest of the Zambezia polling stations, it is certain that Renamo will lose several of its Zambezia parliamentary seats to Frelimo (in the current parliament, Renamo holds 34 of the 49 Zambezia seats to just 15 for Frelimo).
There is a similar situation in the largest constituency, Nampula. Renamo won this province in 1999, albeit only by a slim majority, taking 26 of its 50 seats to 24 for Frelimo. At the current stage of the parallel count, Guebuza has a slight lead, with 99,063 votes to Dhlakama's 94,653.
Of all the 11 constituencies, the only one where Dhlakama and Renamo are leading is Dhlakama's home province of Sofala.

One anomaly is that the Radio has adjusted its total for Guebuza's vote in Tete
province downwards by 54,000 votes, and it is not clear why. Possibly there
was a mathematical error in calculating the previous total. Tete, however, is
the only problem where the results arouse some suspicion, because an impossibly
high turnout is being reported from one of its districts, Changara.
The above results were gathered by
literally hundreds of Radio Mozambique journalists from the results sheets fixed
on the walls of polling stations. They are thus unofficial, and have not yet
been confirmed by the National Elections Commission (CNE).
