Election Special, 5th December 2004

Results at 20.30, Sunday

Maputo, 5 Dec (AIM) - Results from polling stations in remote rural areas in the provinces of Zambezia, Nampula and Sofala that have traditionally favoured Mozambique's Renamo trickled in on Sunday, and, in Radio Mozambique's parallel count of the general election results, they substantially improved the showing of Renamo and its leader and presidential candidate, Afonso Dhlakama.

The radio's parallel count on Saturday night had shown Armando Guebuza, presidential candidate of the ruling Frelimo Party, with almost two and a half times as many votes as Dhlakama. By Sunday night, the gap had narrowed, and Guebuza had less than twice as many votes as Dhlakama (1.17 million to 0.63 million). But this is still an enormous difference, and it seems quite impossible for Dhlakama to overtake Guebuza - particularly as many of the polling stations not yet included in these results come from the Frelimo strongholds of Maputo city and province.

The radio's parallel count, as of 20.30 on Sunday, was as follows:

They exclude the three minor presidential candidates, and the more than a dozen minor parties. None of the minor parties have come anywhere near the five per cent of the total vote required to obtain representation in parliament.

All these results are unofficial and subject to confirmation by the National Elections Commission (CNE).
